Summary of EHR-Related Events - 3/12/2010

Its been a busy last few weeks in the HIT arena, with policy statements flying left and right from a variety of organizations. Some of the highlights include:

  • The House and Senate are circulating "Dear Colleague" letters to send to CMS to note that hospitals will have a hard time of meeting the proposed rule on meaningful use. Both letters are asking CMS to provide a more flexible set of timelines and conditions. You can see both the House and Senate versions of the letter and the latest signers at AHA's website.
  • ONC released its proposed rule for the establishment of certification programs for HIT products. The rule includes the possibility of having a temporary certification program for the first few years, before being replaced by a permanent program.
  • CCHIT announces that they will be developing a oncology certification program.
  • CMS awards 12 states with matching funds for their planning activities necessary to carry out the EHR incentive program established by ARRA 2009.

Next week promises to be quite busy as well, as the deadline for comments on CMS' meaningful use is next Monday. Look for statements from the AMA and other societies (and of course, ASCO's own statement).
