ASCO had the vision to create the EHR work group and host the EHR Roundtable just a few years ago, steps that have led to new opportunities to advance cancer care in all of its many aspects through the use of HIT. This has been especially timely in…

EHR products do not come ready to use "out of the box" and success or failure lies in decisions on implementation that consider safety, consensus practice workflows and reduction in variation. Think of a kitchen remodel project, no two are the same…

It's heating up this summer for HIT

In the last 48 hours, CMS released the final rules governing the first stage of MU and CCHIT launched its oncology workgroup. Things are heating up this July.

Ontology

Ontology is concept derived from Greek philosophers to study the meaning of existance. In the bioinformatics world, it is a central concept in artificial intelligence or AI. AI in turn may lead us to a much more robust view of the what we think of as decision support. Ontology folks love oncologists, because we tend to lay out our treatment strategies in very specific prescribed protocols, which gives them a clear schema to work with. One potential application of ontology is management of dose r… Continue

Hi, Dr. Yu. I see you are planning a transition to Beacon. Our organization is evaulating a system-wide transition to EPIC. Thus, there is interest in what is known regarding Beacon. Do you have some evaluation documentation, or any information to share? Thanks.

Yes we were one of the first to do a full EMR implementation for IKM. We have held off on scanning all documents into the database, however, so we are still a dual paper backup to electronic record. IKM goes through multiple updates every year as specific issues are addressed and modified although no major revisions have been done for over a year as the code is being shifted from smalltalk and Gemstone database to a true relational databse, so all the code has been rewritten and is in final testing right now.
